Emergency Crews Dispatched to Flash Fire on McKinzie Road

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Four people were transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital following a flash fire that broke out just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Shoup Plant in the 800 block of McKinzie Road.

According to Captain James Brown of the Corpus Christi Fire Department, the victims suffered first- and second-degree burns with possible singes to their airways. It is unclear what caused the fire. Two of the four victims were sent to a San Antonio burn unit via HALO Flight, and San Antonio sent another helicopter to pick up a third victim.

The Shoup Plant is a natural gas processing plant operated by Enterprise Products Partners L.P. The plant filters natural gas that is piped into the facility before distributing it out to users.

Company representatives said that a contractor from Strike Construction was changing out a filter when the flash fire occurred. It is unclear why that happened. The company does have safety personnel working on site.

Fire officials said there did not appear to be any damage to the facility, but the CCFD will not be investigating the cause of the fire. That investigation will likely be conducted by an outside agency or Enterprise Products Partners L.P.
