Port Commissioners Take Stand on Proposed Insurance Hikes

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Port of Corpus Christi Commissioners are not happy with the state's department of insurance looking to hike rates to current policies. Under the proposal, Coastal Bend residents would see a 20% increase to all insurance policies. 14 counties could see this increase. Last week a public forum was held by the Texas Department of Insurance. Commissioner Charles Zahn, Jr. says the state group is taking advantage of residents.

"We feel like that we participate in losses," said Zahn. "For example, the fires in Bastrop and hailstorms in Dallas and tornadoes in West, Texas and yet the people in those parts of the state, the legislators in those parts of the state don't feel like they ought to help us when we have a catastrophic event."

Zahn hopes the TDI will see this is a statewide problem and not just locally. No time table has been set on the decision for the surcharge.
