Old County Court House Turns 100 This St. Patrick's Day

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Old Nueces County Court House turned 100 years old this St. Patrick's Day.

In 1914 on March 17, the county commissioners broke ground on the old court house. In 1977, the commissioners moved out of the building to build the current court house.

Commissioner Mike Pusley said a new court house was built instead of renovating the old one because it would've cost more to renovate the old building.

The old building has a lot of history to it, like standing through the 1919 hurricane.

The building is currently dilapidated, boarded up and empty. The future of the building is unknown because Pusley said an estimated $40 million is needed to renovate the building.

In 2004, the building became in position of the county again after private investors and the city owned it beforehand.

The Texas Historical Commission deemed the building untouchable until 2026, when the time comes Pusley said there will be a more solid plan about its fate.
