Someone to Know: Joyce Spurlock Cheers Up the Elderly

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Living at a senior care facility can seem lonely for some, and that's why a local woman has taken it upon herself to change that.

Joyce Spurlock has spent the last two years visiting senior living facilities in the Coastal Bend and passing out dolls to the residents -- and she goes all out.

"Accessories too. They love blankets, bottles, pacifiers, bibs and clothing, dresses and shoes," Spurlock said. "They laugh. They cry. They smile."

She admits she has not always been so giving in the past.

"I've tried the selfish game, and now I realize this is way more rewarding," Spurlock said.

She does have a couple of challenges. One is running out of dolls. Second, she says male residents aren't exactly the doll type.

Spurlock said she plans to continue her nursing home ministry.
