Truck Drivers In High Demand: Del Mar College Prepares Drivers

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Because of the Eagle Ford Shale boom, truck drivers are in high demand.

Del Mar College's Transportation Training Services Program's student enrollment is higher than ever.

Reporter Sarah Acosta met with some of the program's instructors during 3News First Edition and got behind the wheel to see what it takes to drive a 18-wheeler.

The program lasts for three weeks and at the end, students receive a license to drive a semi-trailer truck.

The next opening for the class is April 30, and director of the program John Rojas says to send in applications as soon as possible because the classes fill up quick.

The three week course consists of simulator training, and then getting behind the wheel with an instructor.

Rojas says that 98 percent of the program's students have a job right after they graduate. Starting salaries range anywhere between $50,000 to $80,000.
