Crews Still Working to Clean Up Oil Spill in Houston Shipping Channel

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON (Kiii News) -

Officials are still scrambling to clean an oil leak that shut down one of the world's busiest waterways this weekend.

A barge carrying almost one million gallons of heavy oil collided with a ship Saturday in the Houston shipping channel in Texas City. It is believed that 168,000 gallons spewed into the busy waterway after the collision.

The effect could already be seen on beaches. Business owners up there know they will be closed for days, maybe weeks.

"Whatever the aftereffects to all this is, people being scared of the fish, ain't no good to eat and all that," said Lee Rilet of Lee's Bait and Tackle.

"Now we'd normally be up $800, $900, and I think we're at maybe $80," restaurant manager Victor Atkins said. "So yeah, it definitely killed us."

"We are defining the area. Do it several times a day, and that's what we're doing this morning," said Bruce Clawson of Texas City Emergency Management.

69,000 feet of containment boom have been deployed already, as have a number of skimmers. Authorities call it a significant spill.
