AMITE CITY, LA - A Tangipahoa Parish man is the target of a Secret Service investigation into counterfeit cash after Amite City Police found nearly a quarter of a million dollars.

Amite City Police Department Chief Jerry Trabona says finding the $230,000 in counterfeit money caught homicide detectives off guard. Detectives discovered the money inside a house while searching for a weapon used in another crime.

"Well it was in a bag there, and when we opened the bag to look for the gun there was the money in there. We looked at it and figured it was counterfeit," said Trabona.

Investigators say the counterfeit cash varied in quality, but it could pass as the real deal if brought to the right place.

"If you wanted to go to a nightclub where it's real dim, you know, you could go in there and pass that $100 bill off. You could go somewhere if you had a friend and pass money off. Maybe go out rolling dice and pass this money off," said Trabona.

Police brought in a person of interest to question him along with the Secret Service. Investigators then searched the suspect's home and work studio with his permission. Investigators found another $100,000 in fake cash and four printers. Investigators say they also found a paper band used to wrap bills in the suspect's vehicle.

Trabona says investigators are still sorting through evidence. An arrest in the case is pending.
