Ruptured Natural Gas Pipeline Explodes Near Copano Causeway

Posted: Updated:
ROCKPORT (Kiii News) -

It was quite a sight for drivers on the Copano Causeway Tuesday as a natural gas pipeline about 500 yards west of the bridge exploded just before noon.

Large flames could be seen spewing from the water where the pipeline was located. According to the City of Rockport, the owner of the pipeline quickly began working to shut off the gas valve. Emergency crews let the remaining gas burn off for some time.

No injuries have been reported from the explosion. However, because of the gas line rupture, we are told that natural gas will be unavailable to the Holiday Beach and Lamar areas in Rockport.

Southcross Energy Partners, the company that owns the pipeline, hired Kailo Communications Studio to release a statement on their behalf in regards to Tuesday's rupture.

"Southcross Energy Partners confirms a rupture of one of its natural gas pipelines in Copano Bay near Lamar, Texas. The rupture was detected in a Southcross Control Center and an immediate response was initiated. There were no injuries reported and the fire has been extinguished. Notifications have been made to the appropriate regulatory and emergency response agencies, and Southcross will continue to cooperate with them as needed. This pipeline supplies natural gas to several communities in the area. In order to continue uninterrupted service, gas was allowed to continue to flow until an alternate gas service was implemented at 4 p.m. today. The cause of the pipeline rupture is undetermined. Southcross will investigate the cause, take remediation measures and repair the line as soon as possible."

Please call the City of Rockport Service Center at 361-790-1160 if you need additional information or assistance.
