Open Enrollment Deadline to Sign Up for Obamacare Nears

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

If you are uninsured, you have only a few days left to get 2014 coverage through the health insurance marketplace. Open enrollment ends on Monday, March 31.

For many, the process can be confusing, especially if you have never had to enroll for health insurance. However, there is help to guide you.

A seminars was held Tuesday at the Oveal Williams Senior Center to help uninsured consumers familiarize themselves with the process. For Angelica Villalobos, the briefing provided her with enough information to get enrolled. Others, however, are turning to non-government "navigators."

"What we provide is person-to-person, on-hands counseling," said Tina Durand, a benefits consultant with Heavin & Associates.

Durand works with a local insurance broker. She said that as the sign up deadline approaches, more and more uninsured are turning to them for the free assistance.

Nueces County has one of the highest uninsured rates in the state, while Corpus Christi is estimated to have more than 72,000 people who don't have health insurance.

Administration officials say they are not extending the March 31 deadline. However, they are considering giving those who start the process by month's end additional time if they run into trouble.

Paula Beaton-Forbus, a CHIMES lead investigator, joined 3News in studio at 5 p.m. to provide some more info on the Affordable Care Act, and what you need to do to sign up before deadline.

If you would like to learn more about healthcare options, several upcoming events are being held. Here is a list of different events you can go to:
