Team Coverage: Oil Washes Ashore From Mustang Island to the National Seashore, Cleanup Effort Underway

PORT ARANSAS (Kiii News) -

A cleanup effort is underway after tar balls have washed up on our area beaches. There were reports on Sunday of oil washing up along the coast from Port Aransas to Corpus Christi. The US Coast Guard along with environmental agencies are leading the clean up efforts. Wildlife including birds have also been found with oil on them. The oil is believed to be from last weekend's oil spill near Texas City. A barge carrying almost one million gallons of heavy oil collided with a ship last Saturday. Investigators believe that 168 thousand gallons spewed into the busy waterway after the collision.  Tests are being done to see if the oil found here is in fact the same oil from that spill near Texas City.
