General Land Office Leading Oil Spill Clean Up Efforts

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The General Land Office is leading the clean up process from the Port Aransas jetties to the Padre Island National Seashore as oil and tar balls continue washing up on our shores.

The size of the tar balls ranges from dime-size to six inches in a diameter, and they began showing up on our beaches over the weekend. They are believed to be coming from the recent oil spill in the Houston ship channel after two barges collided.

There is hope, however, that the oil sightings could come to an end.

Kiii News Reporter Bill Churchwell went Live from Port Aransas with an update on the cleanup efforts.

"Unfortunately, we are starting to see some oiled birds," said Mark Spier of the Padre Island National Seashore. "Not a lot, but a few come ashore. We're supposing they got into the oil out in the Gulf and are coming ashore with that on them now. We've have two birds picked up that have expired. Other birds with symptoms of being in the oil."

"Hopefully this is the tail end of it," said Jay Veselka of the General Land Office. "We're even making preps down south just in case, but it seems the oil is getting lighter."

If you come across any wildlife that might be affected by the oil, you are asked not to handle them, but instead, call 888-384-2000 and report their location.
