West Oso ISD Signs to Expand Del Mar Dual Credit Partnership

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A ceremony was held Wednesday at Del Mar College's West Campus as the West Oso Independent School District signed an agreement to expand their participation in Del Mar's Dual Credit Partnership.

Dr. Mark Escamilla, president of Del Mar College, and West Oso Superintendent Elizabeth Saenz signed a Memorandum of Understanding/Articulation Agreement as part of that partnership to expand the school districts participation for the 2014-15 academic year. The plan is to ensure by the fall of 2015 that West Oso High School graduates finish with either an associate's degree or a certificate.

West Oso ISD has already been participating in the Dual Credit program, but this spring will be the first time students are able to receive face-to-face instruction on their own campus, rather than going to Del Mar's West Campus to take classes.

A total of 25 West Oso students are currently taking Dual Credit courses, five of which are seniors. Four of those five will graduate with 12 college credit hours, and one will have 18 college credit hours.

The Dual Credit program is free to students as they enter their sophomore year, giving them a chance to knock out their basics while they are still in high school. In total, 1,467 students at 25 area high schools and 11 home schools are enrolled in Dual Credit courses offered by Del Mar College.
