USO of South Texas Celebrates 73rd Anniversary

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Back on April 4, 1941, President Roosevelt signed the charter establishing the USO in Corpus Christi as the second of its kind in the country.

On Wednesday, the USO of South Texas held a birthday party to mark its 73rd birthday.

It was held Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi, the place the organization has called home since the early 70s. The original site was opened up in the old Kennedy Home on Upper Broadway.

"I really appreciate everything the USO does for the base," NAS-CC Captain Edgecomb said. "I think sailors, marines and soldiers, they vote with their feet and the fact that you see all these people here is a great indication of the services you provide and how well they are utilized on the base, and we appreciate everything you do."

"This is quite a refuge for the students to come over here," Colonel Krebs said. "This is like coming to mom's house, and it's a home away from home. Come down, sit down and relax in a comfortable atmosphere."

The organization is hoping to find a donor to help fund a new $1 million USO building. That, too, will be located on base.
