ATF Hosts Post-Blast Investigations Training Event

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Local, state and federal law officers went through some intense training Tuesday afternoon, bringing them face-to-face with different types of explosive devices.

The training will help the officers when they investigate crimes involving explosions.

Kiii News Reporter Bill Churchwell was invited to take part in the training. He was taken to an undisclosed location by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to witness first-hand how powerful some of those devices can be.

Included in the explosions on display at the training event was a mock suicide bomber. The blast sent its head flying directly over the heads of our 3News crew.

A group of undercover officers, Bomb Squad technicians and even FBI agents gathered for the class on post-blast investigations. It was held by the ATF. They discussed everything from Molotov cocktails to tire bombs and even gas bombs.

"Coming out to a scene, the event has already happened," said David Brock, special agent and bomb technician for the ATF. "To understand what the victims or witnesses saw, it's important to have seen it yourself, to also know, are we dealing with one pound of explosive or 30 pounds of explosive? If you can tell the difference between those."

The officers involved will be certified by the ATF at the end of the four-day class. Officers and ATF agents came from all over south and central Texas to participate.
