Concerns Over Impact of Oil Spill on Kemp's Ridley Population

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Wildlife officials are worried about the impact that the March oil spill in the Galveston Bay area could have on the Kemp's Ridley sea turtle population.

The Kemp's Ridley nesting season is about to be upon us, and those turtles are expected to arrive on Matagorda Island in the next couple of weeks. Right now, those turtles are out in the ocean staging, and they are preparing to come to shore to nest.

"They're basically going to come up through this inter-tidal and work their way through that rackline, so there's a real potential for those turtles to be exposed," said Nancy Brown of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. "And also they're going to be laying their nests, and they'll be going basically through this area, so it's especially important that the surface of these beaches be as oil free as possible."

There currently are more than 300 contracted workers trying to clean up the oil that has landed on Matagorda Island to minimize the impact that the oil will have on wildlife.
