Hooks Post 6-0 Win in Home-Opener

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - The Corpus Christi Hooks shook off six innings of futility to stage a 7th inning uprising and win their 2014 Home Opener on Thursday night.

The 6-0 win over the Tulsa Drillers ruined a strong outing by 2013 Texas League strikeout king Daniel Winkler, who tossed 6 innings of near-perfect no-hit baseball on a windy night at Whataburger Field. Hooks shortstop Nolan Fontana opened the bottom of the 7th inning by drawing just the second walk of the night of Winkler. Outfielder Andrew Applin followed with the Hooks' first hit of the night, which sent Winkler to the showers.

Corpus Christi wasted no time in jumping on his replacement, Carlos Hernandez for three consecutive hits and a 4-0 lead. The Hooks would add two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win their first game of the season at Whataburger Field 6-0.

Hooks starter Ross Seaton, the team's all-time leader in games started with 63, pitched 5 scoreless innings, but did not factor in the decision.

Game two of the series is set for Friday night at 7:10 p.m.
