CCISD Reports More Than 1,400 Students Are Homeless

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Believe it or not, the Corpus Christi Independent School District reports that more than 1,400 of it's child students are homeless.

"I lost my job and also I got, I got real sick, and so it was keeping me from working," said Avery Smith, whose daughter is currently in school. "And then I fell behind on bills and ended up losing our house, and yeah, that was it."

To address the issue of homeless schoolchildren, the CCISD has a program called the Homeless Education Service Agency.

"We try to make things easier for them to enroll, attend and succeed in school," said Susana Majors of the CCISD Homeless Education Office.

Like Smith, Majors said parents can find themselves homeless after a long illness, too many bills, a fire, a divorce or even families who relocated here with the promise of work that didn't exist.

Metro Ministries runs a homeless shelter for women and children, many of whom are students.

"It's a sad but true tale, and in our shelter today, we have 55 women and children," said Patty Clark of Metro Ministries. "19 are children. 13 of them are under the age of five. So we have six that are in primary, middle and high school in our local schools."

Smith said he's just happy his little girl doesn't have to give up something she loves.

"She's very bright, outspoken, and she loves school," Smith said. "I'm very thankful for them, for what they assisted me with."

While the Metro Ministries homeless shelter helps these families find the services to get back on their feet, they say the shelter remains near or above capacity year round.
