CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Corpus Christi City Leaders are looking to end drug and alcohol abuse among pre-teens. The Commission on Children and Youth presented their annual report about drug arrests among 10 to 14-year-olds. Commission Chair, Dr. Ridge Hammons, says it appears parents are the primary source of issue due to a relaxed attitude when it come to drugs and alcohol.

"Of all the children arrested between the ages of 10 and 14 in the state of Texas, they were five times as likely to come from Nueces as anywhere else," said Hammons.

"When the adults of Nueces County are five and a half times as likely to be arrested for drugs and alcohol as anywhere else in the state, stands to reason the students are also more likely to be arrested."

Hammons did say unplanned pregnancies are down and violent crimes are down as well, more than five-percent compared to last year.
