Officers Arrest Wanted Man Hiding in Closet on Waxwing Street

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Corpus Christi police and warrant officers with the Nueces County Sheriff's Office were searching a Flour Bluff neighborhood Friday for a man wanted on a number of charges, including aggravated robbery.

As warrant officers arrived to arrest Michael Ryder, they said he took off. The Corpus Christi Police Department joined in the search, but turned up nothing; until just before 3 p.m. when they moved in to capture Ryder at a home in the 9400 block of Waxwing.

Officers were not in the mood to play around with Ryder after they had asked him at least three times if he had any weapons on him and he finally told them he had a knife.

Ryder had been indicted by a Grand Jury about a week ago and is facing an aggravated robbery charge, along with criminal mischief and tampering with evidence from a case back in November of 2013.

Ryder has over a dozen convictions, according to Nueces County court records, which show he has a lengthy criminal past stretching back to 2000. Those convictions include crimes like drug offenses and auto theft.

"The concerned citizens in the neighborhood were on watch, and when we got back to the office, they called and said they'd seen him come into the house," said Lt. Ashley Isaac of the Nueces County Sheriff's Office. "So we came back, we checked, we didn't see him. We checked the neighborhood and then we came back to square one, and he was in the house, and he was hiding in a closet."

Investigators said he ended up in the closet, but he had originally been hiding in the attic. When he heard officers coming through the attic, he punched a hole in the ceiling below and dropped down.

Ryder was arrested and taken to the Nueces County Jail, where he will go before a judge either later Friday or on Saturday. Of course, he is now also facing a charge of evading arrest, which could end up being a felony offense.
