Hooks Open Homestand with Win Over RockHounds

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - Brady Rodgers picked up his first win of 2014 and Preston Tucker drilled a two-run homer to the deepest part of Whataburger Field as Corpus Christi defeated Midland 5-2 Monday before 4,402. The Hooks struck for five unearned runs in the third off Shawn Haviland. Tucker's fourth home run - a two-out laser into Club 407 just right of the batter's eye - highlighted the uprising. Chris Epps' sacrifice fly plated Nolan Fontana (lead-off single) for the initial run. Shortstop Dusty Coleman's throwing error enabled Rene Garcia to score and Andrew Aplin contributed a broken-bat RBI single.

Haviland's throwing gaffe on a fielder's choice attempt to nab Fontana at the keystone also extended the inning.

Midland hung a singleton on Rodgers during his last inning of work. No. 9-hitter Chad Oberacker lashed a two-out liner just over leaping shortstop Jio Mier to tally Jefry Marte, who'd opened with a single.

Rodgers (1-1) went the prescribed five frames for Hooks starters, allowing five hits and striking out four. Fifty-five of his 80 pitches were strikes.

Reliever Colton Cain worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth. After Colin Walsh singled and Max Muncy doubled to left-center, Cain retired Coleman on a hard liner to third baseman Joe Sclafani, Marte with a swinging strikeout and Blake Forsythe on a ground ball to second.

A one-out, bases-loaded dilemma the next inning chased Cain in favor of Jorge De Leon, who held the RockHounds for five outs, setting the table for Patrick Urckfitz's first save. Walsh greeted De Leon with a sacrifice fly, but Corpus Christi escaped further damage as Muncy flew to right.

The Hooks then mounted a threat of their own, forcing Haviland to the showers in the process. Frank Gailey walked Aplin to load the bases with two gone, but got Tucker on a full-count fly to Coleman.

Haviland (0-1), who didn't pitch last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery, exited with 6 2/3 innings, six hits, a walk and two strikeouts.

Sclafani collected two hits to pace Corpus Christi. Midland had four players with two hits - Billy Burns, Muncy, Marte and Oberacker.

Aaron West (2-0) takes the mound for Corpus Christi Tuesday at 7:10 vs. Nate Long (2-0).
