Students Bound for Rome to Witness Canonization Ceremony

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Some lucky Coastal Bend residents, including students and teachers from John Paul II High School, are on their way to Rome to witness history.

Pope John Paul II will be canonized on Sunday, and our own citizen reporters from John Paul II High School will be there to watch. About 70 members of the community boarded buses Wednesday morning heading for Houston, where they will catch a plane to Rome.

Pope John Paul II and Pope John the 23rd will be proclaimed saints at the ceremony at the Vatican Sunday. Pope John the 23rd was pope from 1958 until his death in 1963. Pope John Paul II was pope from 1978 until his death in 2005.

For Michael Lira, a student at the Blessed John Paul II High School, the trip is more than just witnessing a canonization ceremony.

"My nerves are building up bad. No sleep last night whatsoever, I'm so excited. So amped up. I woke up, I feel great," Lira said. "It's quite funny. We're leaving the school -- it's Blessed John Paul II High School -- and we're coming back and it's St. John Paul II High School. So that's something big in my heart right now."

Along with attending the canonization ceremony in St. Peter's Square, the group will visit Pompeii, Assisi, the Vatican Museum and Roman landmarks like the Colosseum.

Lira and other members of the group will act as 3News' official eyes and ears for the canonization proceedings. We'll hear from them Live from Rome beginning Thursday evening at 5 p.m., continuing through Sunday's ceremonies.
