CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - A man and woman accused of beating a 67-year old man to death during a home burglary back in August of 2012 plead guilty in the 148th District Court Thursday morning.

Antonio Arredondo and Esmeralda Benavidez were both arrested for the murder of 67-year old Felipe Martinez at his home in the 1900 block of Violeta Court. Martinez' family members said he knew his attackers.

In court Thursday, Arredondo plead guilty to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in a Texas Department of Corrections facility. In exchange for his guilty plea, the state dismissed charges against him of burglary and theft.

Benavidez also plead guilty to murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Both will get credit for time served.

It was around 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2012, when Martinez' health provider called the Corpus Christi Police Department to report an assault, telling officers she arrived at Martinez' apartment to find him with significant head trauma. Martinez was rushed to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital for medical treatment, but he died from his injuries days later.

Benavidez was arrested the day after Martinez died, and Arredondo was arrested on August 21, 2012.
