CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Students from John Paul II High School, along with about 70 other Coastal Bend residents, arrived in Rome Thursday to take part in the canonization of their school's namesake.

On Sunday, Pope John Paul II and Pope John the 23rd will become saints at a massive canonization ceremony in St. Peter's Square, and the students will be there to witness that piece of history being made.

A total of nine students and 10 faculty members from John Paul II High School went on the pilgrimage. For some, it was there first time out of the country -- for one, it was his first time on an airplane.

They arrived in Rome Thursday and checked into their hotel, getting a little time to see the sights. Along with witnessed the canonization ceremony on Sunday, the students will also see famous places in Italy like Pompeii, Assisi and the Roman Colosseum.
