City Considers Handing Crossing Guard Program to Private Company

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Police Chief Floyd Simpson is looking at making some big changes to the school crossing guard program. It's an idea to save money and keep police officers focused on fighting crime.

The idea is to turn over the crossing guard program to a private company out of Houston.

"The company that we're going to contract with will assume all of those employees," Chief Simpson said. "Their lives won't change. Everything is going to remain the same within. They'll just have better management."

Simpson said the idea is to allow the police department to focus on catching crooks, not overseeing the day-to-day operations of the crossing guard program.

City Council is set to vote soon on giving the job to All City Management Services out of Houston. They will be paid $257,000 to administer the program, and will also have to find replacements for those crossing guards who don't show up for duty.

Right now, that job falls to uniformed police officers.

"So far as the employees, they're probably going to find themselves in a better spot than where they are now," Simpson said. "And as for the taxpayer, you know, $52,000 in savings for the taxpayer. Right now we spend about $310,000 on the program."

School officials said they were actually hoping to hear that the crossing guard program was being expanded.

All City could take over the program before the end of the school year.
