First Kemp's Ridley Nest Found at Padre Island National Seashore

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Today, the first Kemp's ridley nest was confirmed in Texas during 2014. This nest was found at Padre Island National Seashore, near the 34 mile marker. The nesting turtle was located by Padre Island National Seashore Biological Technician Jamie Fisher who was conducting a nesting turtle patrol. Kemp's ridleys typically nest when it is windy, and today winds blew strongly along the south Texas coast. Jaime also found another set of Kemp's ridley tracks (left by a different turtle) at the National Seashore today, but a nest could not be located there since the tracks were highly wind-blown. Searches for a potential second nest will continue at the track site.

The confirmed nest contained 85 eggs which are being transported to the Incubation Facility in the Turtle Laboratory at the National Seashore. The eggs should arrive at the Turtle Laboratory and be placed in the facility at about 5:15 pm today. Hatchlings will likely be ready for release from this nest sometime between June 13 and June 18.

The Kemp's ridley nesting season could extend until mid-July, but most nesting is expected to occur in May and June. During 2013, 153 Kemp's ridley nests were confirmed in Texas, including 87 at Padre Island National Seashore.
