For nine area high school senior tennis players, there hard work on and off the court paid off Monday morning as they were each given $1,000 scholarships by the Corpus Christi Tennis Association at the HEB Tennis Center.

"I'm not an excellent tennis player or anything, but it was nice to be rewarded for playing tennis," Ray High School senior Ronisha Christie said. "Not necessarily for being number one in the state."

"We've received a significant amount of money to help fund these scholarships," said Penny Maingot of the Corpus Christi Tennis Association. "We are just thrilled to be able to give out so many more scholarships this year. We think it's important to give back to the community."

"Tennis players don't get recognized as much, and I'm proud to get a scholarship and be able to go to college and pursue my college career, and tennis is everything," West Oso senior Ramiro Castro said.

The amount of scholarships the CCTA gave out this year doubles the amount the non-profit has ever given out in a year.
