Union Workers Celebrate Workers Memorial Day

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Memorial Day is still nearly a month away, but on Monday, labor unions all across the country observed Workers Memorial Day.

At the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers on Saratoga, union members remembered their fallen comrades who have been killed or injured on the job.

In 2012, the government reported that an average of 12 people died every day in work related accidents. Though the numbers were higher here in Texas, local union leaders think they know why.

"We don't have enough inspectors to make sure there is enough work places that are safe," said James Gaston of the Texas AFL-CIO. "As a matter of fact, they estimate it would take an inspector, if you had one business, they would have to go around 137 years before he got back to that business to inspect it again."

Gaston said last year's fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, which killed 15 people, is an example of that problem. The plan had not been inspected in more than 25 years.
