Posted: Updated:
In her final game at Chapman Field, J.J. Jackson cranked a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, but it wasn't enough as the Houston Cougars (30-19) scattered 13 hits to secure a 9-4 victory today in non-conference action. Jackson went 2-for-2 and chipped in 3 RBIs to lead the Islanders' (15-34) bats while Michelle Sorenson went 2-for-3 at the plate.   The Islanders jumped on board first in the bottom of the first after Jackson drilled a two-out RBI double to left center to plate Dani Tefft, who reached on a fielder's choice. The Cougars answered with a run of their own in the top of the second after Kayla Holland reached on an error by the Islanders and landed on third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Haley Outon.

Houston's bats kept striking as they pushed three more runs across in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Tiffani McKnight sent a two-run triple down the right field line before scoring on an Islanders' throwing error. She pushed Selena Hernandez and Katie St. Pierre across, who both reached on back-to-back infield singles.

A&M - Corpus Christi rallied back to pull within one in the bottom of the fourth after Jackson drilled her fifth career homer over the left center wall to score Valerie Perez, who started the frame with her 11th double of the season.

The Cougars put together a four-run top of the fifth to extend their lead to eight. Outon hit a two-run home run over the left center wall with two outs to plate St. Pierre. Jordan Rains followed with a double to center field before scoring on an Islanders' throwing error on an Alexis Dunn at-bat. Jaime Edwards then stepped to the plate and hit a RBI double to left center to score the Cougars eighth run across.

In the sixth, after Katie Blanar replaced Constance Brandenburg in the Islanders' circle, St. Pierre scored on a RBI double to center field by Outon. The Islanders responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth after Sorenson ripped a RBI single to left field to plate Cassidy Ivy, who came in to pinch run for Jackson. Jackson reached on a leadoff walk before Cassie Carroll advanced Ivy to second on the second straight walk by the Cougars. Lindsey Lyles then landed Ivy on third and Carroll to second with a sacrifice bunt, before Sorenson nailed her second hit of the game.

Along with Jackson and Sorenson's two hits apiece, Mickayla Cochran, Tefft and Perez each tallied one hit. Tefft also registered her 14th stolen base of the season in the bottom of the fifth. She now sits in sixth place in the Islanders' record book for a single season and has posted 21 stolen bases in her career.

Brandenburg (1-14) suffered the loss for the Islanders in the circle. The senior allowed 10 hits and eight runs, four of them earned, while walking one and striking out two in five innings. Blanar faced nine batters, and allowed three hits and one run in two innings.

Summer Groholski (6-5) picked up the win for the Cougars in the circle. She held the Islanders to seven hits and four runs, while walking three and striking out one in seven innings.

The Islanders will head back on the road for their final regular-season Southland Conference games at Houston Baptist. The Islanders will face the Huskies in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3, starting at 1 p.m. before wrapping the series on Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m
