Neighbors Rescue Family from Ponder Street House Fire

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - A family of three is thanking the kindness of strangers for saving their lives Thursday morning after a fire broke out at their home in the 700 block of Ponder Street, near Incarnate Word.

"The 20 or so people that were standing in our front yard, banging on our windows and our doors that there was a fire, we appreciate each and everyone of them," said Nancy Ford Meek, whose home caught fire.

The fire broke out at around 10 a.m. Smoke alerted nearby residents to the fire, and they rushed to the home and helped rescue the three people and three pets that were inside the home. One of those who helped in the effort was neighbor Abraham Salazar.

"We started helping, knocking on windows, doors, to see if anyone was inside," Salazar said. "Come to find out there were three people in there and a dog, and since I'm in the plumbing business, I jobbed the fence to see if we could help and get the gas meter off, and that's what we did, you know."

As for what caused the fire, that is still under investigation.
