Fisherman Dies from Medical Condition in Bay Waters on Padre Island

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Emergency crews were called out to the bay side of Padre Island, about a quarter of a mile off Park Road 361 near Mustang Island State Park, where a 69-year old fisherman appeared to be drowning Friday morning.

Officials identified the man as Ovidio Olivares.

It was just after 11 a.m. when Olivares reportedly fell while fishing from a small kayak and appeared to be drowning. Nearby fishermen rushed to his rescue and pulled him from the water, and lifeguards, medics and authorities arrived on the scene soon after.

First responders performed chest compressions on the fisherman at the scene before putting him in an ambulance and transporting him to Bay Area Medical Center, where he later died. Officials said he died a natural death due to medical issues he was suffering from.
