Agencies Respond to Small Oil Spill in Corpus Christi Ship Channel

Posted: Updated:
A relatively small oil spill in the Corpus Christi ship channel Friday morning could cost whoever is responsible thousands of dollars in fines and cleanup costs.

A sheen of oil was reported to the U.S. Coast Guard shortly after 8 a.m. Friday. It was spotted in the Viola Turning Basin off of Suntide Road. A cleanup crew placed booms around the spill to keep it from spreading, and eventually, the U.S. Coast Guard was able to determine that the spill amounted to less than 25 gallons.

Officials said the cleanup process should be finished sometime Friday, and that there appeared to be no environmental impact.

The General Land Office, which is also investigating the spill, said the fines for the spill itself is minimal; but once the company is identified, they potentially face thousands of dollars in state and federal fines, as well as costs for the response from different agencies, and the costs of the actual cleanup and disposal process itself.
