Help Recycle Oysters To Restore Local Reefs At Sink Your Shucks Event

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Due to over-fishing and over-use of our local oyster beds, the oyster population has been depleted.

Since 2009, The Harte Research Institute is helping the problem with an oyster recycling program "Sink Your Shucks," that has so far restored 400,000 pounds of oysters back into local reefs.

Sarah Acosta was live for 3News First Edition at University Beach with the TAMUCC marine biology program learning how the recycling process works.

The Sink Your Shucks event will be this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Goose Island State Park near Rockport, and volunteers are needed to help with the process.

Volunteers will be needed in the water and outside the water to help place bags of oysters onto the reefs. For more information on the program or event this Saturday check the website: http://oysterrecycling.org/
