Positive News Discussed at Annual Tourist Industry Luncheon

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Several hundred business and civic leaders gathered at the American Bank Center Thursday to get an update on tourism in the Corpus Christi area.

It was the annual tourist industry luncheon put on by the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and the news was all positive. Virtually every sector of the local tourism industry shows major gains over the past year, and all signs point to even better years ahead.

Thursday's guest speaker, the internationally-known futurist Mike Walsh, told an audience at the Selena Auditorium that, if business owners hope to sustain this kind of growth, they need to be thinking the same way as companies like Google and Amazon -- meaning they need to market their products based on data collection and research; but the main message put out by the CVB Thursday focused on all the things that have been going right.

"Exciting presentation today about the tourist industry. Talked about sales tax revenue being up 38-percent since 2010, hotel occupancy is up, hotel revenue is up," Councilman Mark Scott said. "We have new and exciting tourist attractions coming on line. We have hotels going up all over town."

The emcee for Thursday's event was Kiii News Anchor Joe Gazin. Following the presentation, the actual luncheon took place in the exhibition hall lobby at the American Bank Center.
