Family Members, Volunteers Sift Through Ashes of Home on Louisiana Avenue

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - It was an emotional day Monday for a family whose home was destroyed by a fire just over a week ago. The cleanup process is just beginning.

The fire broke out at the two-story home Saturday, May 3, in the 400 block of Louisiana Avenue, shortly after the family had left to attend the Buc Days parade. The house was covered in thick, black smoke, and the interior was gutted by flames.

Elizabeth Riley and her three daughters were left homeless as a result.

Riley's brothers flew into town and, joined by volunteers from St. John's United Methodist Church, began sifting through the ashes of the home to salvage whatever they could. With gloves, shovels and plenty of determination, they managed to retrieve some of the family's personal belongings.

Kiii News Reporter Bill Churchwell went back to the scene of the fire and came back with details on their salvage efforts.
