Memorial Ceremony Held to Honor Fallen Officers

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Local police gathered Monday morning to honor their fallen brothers at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center. It was the eighth annual Coastal Bend Regional Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony.

The Nueces County Sheriff's Office, Corpus Christi Police Department and the Port Police Department were on hand to pay tribute. Among them was the uncle of Matthew Thebeau, an officer who passed away in January of 2008.

"It's tough. It's tough for me," said Martin Thebeau, Matthew's uncle. "He lived with me while he was in the Academy and has always been close, and was almost like a son to me. But he did what he loved. He made us smile, and that's something I'll never forget."

The names of 22 fallen police officers, Sheriff's deputies and constables were read, and flowers were attached to a memorial wreath. There was also a City proclamation as part of the national observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
