City Proclaims Beginning of Elder Abuse Prevention Month

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Several activities around the Coastal Bend have been planned this May to recognize Elder Abuse Prevention Month, which began with a proclamation during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

It's not just physical abuse or neglect of the elderly, but financial exploitation that is a major problem. The numbers of abuse cases in Nueces County are substantial.

"We received about 98,000 reports in the state of Texas in 2013. About 1,500 of those were in our county alone, in Nueces County," said Jennifer Catalini with Adult Protective Services. "For every one case we receive, about 23 go unreported. That's why it's so important to spread awareness of elder abuse."

The Department of Adult Protective Services reports more than 2.9 million residents in Texas are 65 and older and qualify as elderly. To report suspected abuse, you can call the abuse hotline at 1-800-252-5400.
