Kemp's Ridley Turtle Released

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Folks over at the Padre Island National Seashore were busy Tuesday, as nine Kemp's ridley sea turtles came ashore to nest.  The eggs are taken to the incubation facility at the turtle lab, and then the mother turtles are returned back to the Gulf of Mexico.  Tuesday, one of those turtles was fitted with a special transmitter, so its movements can be tracked.

Donna Shaver with PINS told 3 News, "because its such a critically endangered species we need to know where they are, where they spend the majority of their lives at sea.  They are just on the beach to lay eggs for a brief moment in their life history.  The vast majority of time they are in the ocean."

It's important information to understand a turtle that is an endangered species. The Kemp's ridley nesting season could extend until mid-July, but most nesting is expected to occur in May and June.

During 2013, 153 kemp's ridley nests were confirmed in Texas, including 87 at Padre Island National Seashore. but so far, the numbers this year haven't measured up.

Shaver said, "although we had a good day today with 9 Kemp's ridley nesting, our total for the year is only 14 nests and that is low compared to other recent years by this time."

If you find a nesting sea turtle, or hatchlings call this number, it's 1-866-turtle5.
