Talks Underway to Bring Alamo Drafthouse to SEA District

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Just one day after City Council paved the way for the building of a dine-in movie theater complex on the southside of town, it was revealed Wednesday that plans are in the works for an Alamo Drafthouse to be built in the SEA district, next to Whataburger Field.

It may seem like a coincidence, but the developer said he is still negotiating with the San Antonio businessman who wants to build the theater.

Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns went Live from the Batter's Box, across from Whataburger Field, where the newest Alamo Drafthouse will be located if negotiations are successful.

Talks have been going on for the past nine months between the Drafthouse franchise holder for all of South Texas and Bill Durrill, owner of Durrill Properties, and now both sides have signed a letter of intent to build the business. But because negotiations have not yet been completed, details on how big the Drafthouse would be or how many screens it might have were not revealed.

Durrill said the SEA district is a prime spot for such an entertainment destination.

"With the amount of traffic that Whataburger Field and Brewster Street and Hurricane Alley, Concrete Street, the American Bank Center, we have over a million people that are visiting that neighborhood already annually," Durrill said.

Other business people in the area say it is long past time that such a business was brought to the area.

"It would bring some legitimacy to everything that's going on down here, and that would be great," said Mark Schaberg, general manager of Concrete Street.

City Councilman Kelly Allen represents that district and said it is wonderful news, both for the SEA district and the city as a whole. Durrill said he hopes to see the deal completed well before the end of the year.
