Special Mass to Celebrate John Paul II High School Name Change

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - John Paul II High School will be making a big change Friday as they officially become St. John Paul II High School following the canonization of their namesake in April.

A special mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, with Bishop Michael Mulvey there to honor the change.

"Knowing that he is a saint now, and that our namesake is St. John Paul II, it means a lot," John Paul II Principal Perry LeGrange said. "We want our students to emulate him and to have that example."

70 members of the Coastal Bend community, including several students and faculty members from John Paul II High School, were able to make the pilgrimage to Rome to witness the canonization ceremony in Vatican Square.

"It was just an amazing experience, just to say I was there. I got to witness history," John Paul II Senior Cameron Galvan said. "I got to witness something that is never going to happen again, for at least John Paul II, for being a saint. It was an amazing experience. Something you never forget."

The school invites the community to celebrate the mass on Friday, and to also stop by the school for tours and information to enroll for the fall school year.
