Military Matters: Coast Guard Officer Receives Award for Valor
A Coast Guard petty officer received official recognition in the nation's capital last week. The officer, based at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi was presented with an award for valor. In our Military Matters report, we show you how the coast guard member went above and beyond the call of duty. Alejandro Mayorkas, the Deputy Secretary, Homeland Secretary said, "on October 8th, 2013, Chief Petty Officer Jesse Meerscheidt observed a head on collision involving two vehicles on his way to work. One of the cars spun off the road and into the intracoastal waterway. The other car rolled over twice and caught fire. Unable to free her and increasingly concerned for her welfare, Chief Petty Officer Meerscheidt bear hugged the shattered window and removed it from it's housing, successfully rescued the woman and carried her to safety. This past Monday, the secretary of homeland security presented an award for valor to Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Jesse Meerscheidt for actions that put his life at risk to save another.
