U.S.S. Lexington Hosts Wreath Laying Ceremony to Honor Veterans

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - A special wreath laying ceremony was held onboard the U.S.S. Lexington Monday to honor all of our country's heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Among those gathered onboard the Lexington were several veterans, some of whom actually served onboard the ship before it became a museum.

Veteran Joe Elizondo, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam, placed a wreath on a plank, letting it slide over the ledge of the Lexington and into the bay. It was part of a special tribute to honor all of the men and women who have fought and died for our country.

"It's a sacrifice. When we were young, we went to Vietnam," Elizondo said. "Matters a lot to me that these young men who didn't come back will never be a dad, or be hugged by their wives or mom, or their whole family."

Among the veterans that 3News spoke with, many said while Veterans Day is a day to honor all veterans, Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave their lives, and died fighting for our country.

The U.S.S. Lexington is a popular tourist location, earning it the title of one of the top military museums to visit on Memorial Day weekend. Those in charge estimate between 8,000-10,000 visitors to the Lexington this holiday weekend.
