Voters Hit the Polls for Primary Election Runoffs Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Tuesday was election night for a number of hotly contested primary runoff election races all over the state, including a couple right here in Nueces County.

The one generating the most heat locally is the the Republican party race for the Precinct 4 County Commissioner's seat, between incumbent Joe McComb and challenger Brent Chesney.

Kiii News Reporter Bill Churchwell spoke with both candidates and joined us Live from Padre Island with more details.

Another hotly contested race is the Democratic primary runoff race for County Court at Law 5, between Martha Huerta-Quintanilla and Melissa Madrigal.

County Court at Law 5 is the juvenile court that oversees all of the county's legal matters dealing with those under the age of 17. Huerta-Quintanilla has been at the helm of that court since Brent Chesney bowed out to run for the Precinct 4 County Commissioner's seat.

Madrigal has often filled in for past judges in County Court at Law 5. While both candidates say their experience speaks for itself, their main focus on Tuesday was getting voters to head to the polls.

According to Nueces County's chief election official, this election cycle did see a larger "ballot by mail" turnout. That's due to a new law that went into effect this year, which allows those 65 and older to request an annual ballot.

County Clerk Diana Barrera says that, on most runoff elections, it is not unusual to see only a six- or seven-percent voter turnout. She is not expecting much more than that when the polls close Tuesday evening.

Other big races around the state include the Republican race for Lieutenant Governor between David Dewhurst and Dan Patrick.
