Bomb Squad Investigates Suspicious Package at Convenience Store

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - A suspicious package found outside of the Stripes on Holly and Kostoryz stopped traffic and forced four businesses to be evacuated for six hours Wednesday morning. Luckily, the package turned out not to be harmful.

It was around 5 a.m. when the Corpus Christi Police Department Bomb Squad was dispatched after a customer alerted the store clerk about a suspicious black box with wires in the parking lot. The Bomb Squad robot was deployed and HAZMAT crews were called out to investigate a liquid found inside the package.

"The package is going to be taken for disposal and investigators are starting their evaluation to determine if any criminal offense is going to be pursued," CCPD Senior Officer Kirk Stowers said.

Police have several hours of video surveillance to go through to see who placed the package there and if there was any criminal intent.

"Using a hoax device, which is a felony offense," Stowers said. "It's got some stiff penalties for somebody, if they intended to cause a reaction from somebody. They could be looking at some serious jail time."

If you have any information that could help police, please call Crime Stoppers at 361-888-8477.
