Bishop Holds Off East Bernard in 5-4 Win

Fresh from earning a spot in the Class 2A Regional Finals for the first time since 2009, the Bishop Badgers used a big first inning to beat East Bernard 5-4 in game one of their Best-of-Three series in San Marcos on Thursday night.

Bishop took advantage of first-inning wildness by East Bernard pitcher Kyle Hlavinka to score four runs without getting a base hit. Kobrey Garcia started the scoring by trotting home on a bases-loaded walk to teammate Aaron Cardona. The Badgers capped their first-inning good fortune by scoring two runs on a wild pitch and an error on the same play to take a 4-0 lead.

It was 5-0 Bishop when East Bernard rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning to score 4 runs. Korbrey Garcia stepped in to relieve starter Aaron Cardona by striking out Nathan Hlavlinka for the final out of the game.

Game two of the series is set for 2:30pm on Saturday in San Marcos, with a third game to follow. The Badgers need one more win to advance to the State Tournament in Round Rock next week.
