Wreath Laying Ceremony to Remember the Battle of the Midway

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - The Battle of Midway helped turn the tide of the war in the Pacific back in 1942, and one of the men who fought in the battle was aboard the U.S.S. Lexington on Wednesday.

Retired Chief Petty Officer Robert McKinley, 91, served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and was on the U.S.S. Lexington Wednesday morning for a wreath laying ceremony to remember the Battle of Midway. It was one of three aircraft carriers sent to meet an invading Japanese fleet heading to Midway Island.

Planes from those carriers sunk four Japanese carriers on June 4, 1942. The fighting continued for several more days, but the initial battle pretty much decided how things would turn out in the end.

"There will never be another war like that war. Never," McKinley said.

McKinley is a longtime volunteer aboard the U.S.S. Lexington, and said he appreciated the ceremony. Also at the ceremony, helping to remember the Battle of Midway, was Rear Admiral Roy Kelley, our Chief of Naval Air Training at Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.
