Hooks' Late Rally Falls Short to Missions

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - San Antonio pulled away with four eighth-inning runs to defeat Corpus Christi 7-2 Monday at Whataburger Field before 6,303. The Missions (32-31) broke open a one-run affair, popping Brady Rodgers (1-8) for four runs on three hits and an error. Jason Hagerty (RBI) and Cody Overbeck had booming doubles; Austin Hedges a two-RBI single past a drawn-in infield. Adam Buschini's RBI ground out provided the final margin.

San Antonio crafted a two-out rally during the first, tagging David Rollins for a pair. Singles by Casey McElroy and Hagerty sandwiched Rymer Liriano's double to right.

A bases-loaded fielding miscue enabled Preston Tucker to score as Corpus Christi (31-32) sliced the lead against Jesse Hahn. Jonathan Meyer followed Tucker's right-field flare with a walk and Jio Mier delivered a two-out infield single, putting Tucker just 90 feet from home. Shortstop Brian Bixler then mishandled a ball to his right off the bat of Tyler Heineman.

Rollins, who turned the game over to Rodgers after five frames, allowed four hits, a walk and struck out four. Fifty of his 76 pitches were strikes.

Tucker collected his third hit of the night and 15th home run of 2014 as Corpus Christi evened up in the sixth. Hahn went on to achieve two outs, but also walked two and was lifted for Frank Garces. Garces (2-1) put out the fire, retiring Heineman on a fly to second.

Hahn's line: five hits, one earned run, three walks and five strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches (60).

Bixler redeemed himself in the San Antonio seventh, taking Rodgers into the right-center field gap with an RBI double, which plated Buschini (two-out single/stolen base).

The Hooks and Missions wrap their four-game series at Houston's Minute Maid Park Tuesday at 6:10. It's the inaugural Astros Futures Game, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors. Mike Hauschild (1-1) pitches for Corpus Christi vs. Josh Geer (2-6).
