Watch Out For The Turtles This Summer

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Summer time means more people will be frequenting our beaches and bays, but we must also remember that endangered sea turtles inhabit those waters.

Marine experts with the Texas State Aquarium say to always dispose of your trash, because it could end up in our waters. And the turtles could eat the trash, causing physical damage.

Turtle experts also ask boaters to use caution when out in the water and jetties.

"Boat strikes are one of the number one threats to sea turtles. It damages their shells, it can sever their flippers and it can cause some real harm to those animals. Just know that they are out there and watch where you are going," said Carol Haley with the Texas State Aquarium.

Haley says slowing down in no wake zones can help boaters avoid hitting the endangered turtles with their boats and propellers.

If you come across a sea turtle or nest, experts say not to touch them but to call the Padre Island National Seashore at 1-866-TURTLE5.
