No Jail Time for Parents Found Guilty of Injury to a Child, Manufacturing Meth

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - A Nueces County jury decided Friday morning that Ryan and Heather Sanders, two parents found guilty on five counts of injury to a child and one count of manufacture of a controlled substance, will face no fines or prison time, but rather community supervision.

Ryan Sanders cried following the sentencing, mouthing the words "thank you" three times to the jurors.

It was April of 2013 when the young parents were found to be living out of a vehicle on the beach near Bob Hall Pier with their children. Heather gave birth to one of their children there on the beach, and did not seek immediate medical attention. It wasn't until doctors at Driscoll Children's Hospital noticed that some of the children were malnourished that the couple was arrested.

The sentence of community supervision technically means they were each given about five years of probation. The jury decided to suspect the prison sentences because they found that the couple's children were not present when the two manufactured methamphetamine.

Ryan Sanders' attorney, Terry Shamsie, said the jury handed down the appropriate punishment since it was his client's first offense.

The couples' four young children are currently living with relatives in South Carolina.
