First Kemp's Ridley Hatchling Release of 2014 at National Seashore

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Park rangers at the Padre Island National Seashore hosted their first Kemp's Ridley sea turtle hatchling release of the year Monday morning.

Rangers said they were surprised at the amount of people who showed up to watch, considering it was a Monday.

Dr. Donna Shaver with the National Seashore said that, so far, 96 Kemp's Ridley turtle nests have been found on the Texas coast.

"And that includes 61 here at the National Seashore, and the hatchlings released today were from a nest found on the 27th of April, found on the Seashore," Shaver said.

The next turtle releases will take place later this month and in July. For more information about future hatchling releases, you can call the Hatchling Hotline at 361-949-7163.
