Suspect in Portland Park Shootings Arrested in Helotes, Texas

HELOTES, Texas (Kiii News) - Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested 27-year old David Malcolm Strickland Friday in Helotes, Texas. Strickland is accused of sexually assaulting and shooting two teen girls in the head at Violet Andrews Park in Portland back in June of 2012.

One of the victims, 19-year old Mollie Olgin of Ingleside, died from her injuries. The other, 18-year old Kristene Chapa, survived and has been recovering from her injuries ever since.

On Friday morning the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force was contacted by Texas Rangers for help finding and capturing Strickland, who was hiding out in an apartment in the 12000 block of Bandera Road in Helotes. After brief surveillance, task force officers and Rangers entered the apartment and took Strickland into custody without incident.

Strickland is currently being held at the Helotes Police Department awaiting extradition to the San Patricio County Jail, where he faces charges of capital murder, aggravated assault with a weapon and aggravated sexual assault.

Now 20 years old, Chapa most recently went for rehabilitation at the TIRR Memorial Hospital in Houston.
